I could have had it all—a full ride to an ivy-league school, glory and respect, interview requests from the local sports talk radio station and papers throughout the nation. I could have gone pro.

Only shopping isn’t considered a sport. Although I’ve always known I was good, it was during prom season that I truly honed my skills.

The dress was a cinch. The shoes, a breeze. The brooch and jewelry had been my mother's. She sewed them onto a ribbon to match my dress. I thought I was good to go until the best hairdresser in town (aka Aunt Mary) asked me what accessories I would be bringing for my hair. The idea had never even occurred to me. Hair accessories?

Feeling like everyone but me had been invited to the party, I turned to my bride-to-be sister for support and consultation. (I should mention that my sister, like myself, also could have gone pro). When I reached her apartment she was sweating profusely. “Napkins! I don’t know where to even start. And color! What colors do I begin with?” My sister’s apartment was littered with bridal magazines, fabric samples and endless cards from photographers, caterers and cake bakers.

“What do you know about hair accessories?” I asked. She rolled her eyes as if she knew all. I returned the gesture followed up with a “puhhh-leeeeze.” She began sifting through her stacks of magazine clippings and internet print-outs. There were so many options for every hair style and length.

I pictured myself as the bride with long, curly locks. I could use a jeweled French clip or a tiara decked with silver leaves. And if I were the sleek-haired bride? I’d give myself rhinestone-encrusted bobbypins. Functional, yet elegant. And for Suzi, who we all knew would be the prom queen—I’d put her in a silk headband accented with little gems. Or possibly those hair sticks with totally hip beads attached to the end since her style is a little funky. For myself, the prom shopping queen, I chose a spikey metal head-piece adorned with beads and crystals. It would not only hold my updo in place, it would add a glamorous finish to my look.

The neatest thing about finally settling on a hair accessory was shaping a look I wouldn't have had otherwise. I didn't realize how much flair my little head piece added until I looked in the mirror. It was a look beyond complete—it was incredible and so put-together. I'm generous with my insight—and so to you—whether you prefer a classic look, a free-spirited look or a trendy look, you're limited only by your imagination when it comes to the perfect hairpiece.
